To Chase, To Achieve, and To Love

                           --book review for Little Women

I. Short introduction of the content

First published in 1868, Little Woman is a book by Louisa May Alcott that describes a story of a family with four sisters and how they grow to maturity and independence.

Meg, Jo, Amy and Beth are four sisters born in the March family, America. As the result of the civil war, their father had to go and join the army, which means that they’re left home with their mother and a servant. Due to different experiences and life goals, these four little women finally grow up to be different person. Basically, the book little women is conveying concept of feminism that women can be independent and strong, and never live to falling in love and getting married.

II. My point of view after reading

What Little Women firstly brings me different with other works is that it describes the true life. Meg wants to be an actress, Amy wants to be a famous painter, Beth wants to be a great piano player, but in the end only Jo has realized her dream of becoming a writer. Apparently, the author knows so well that it’s impossible for everyone to achieve what they want even if they’re talented. It could be so hard for you to accept the result, but the process of chasing your dream is what we value most.

When in childhood Jo talks about her temper with mother, she’s educated with words “There are some natures too noble to curb and too lofty to bend”. Only after reading the whole book had I realized what that means. Jo never let her free spirit that born in her blood bend to the mess of life, but on the other side, she manages it so well after hearing the news that Amy is with the one-in-her-heart – Laurie. Perhaps this is what we called growing up, we conceal some things to behave well, while sticking to some to remind us the principle of living in the world.

The last thing I want to talk about is the free spirit of women in this book, which is the main topic of it. If you read carefully, you’ll find that independent-feminism is everywhere. When Meg was sent out from her family, John asked her mother if it’s a good idea for her to go away like this, the response he get was “Girls have to go into the world and make up their own minds about things”. The main character Jo shows even more thoughts like this. She evaluates women that they have their own minds and souls as well as just hearts, they’ve got ambition and talent as well as just beauty. She said “I’m so sick of people saying that love is just all a woman is fit for.” No wonder that the author is trying to tell all her readers that women are never only live to love, they also live to chase and achieve. What’s more, different choices of these girls are all admitted as a right path to the happiness. No matter is Meg or Amy who eventually get married and gave up on her dreams or Jo who stay un-married all her life and stick to her dream, they’ve all got a great life. Women can choose whatever the way they want to live, and it’s never just one path you can go to reach for the meaning of your life.

III. Summary

I’m so surprised that Louisa May Alcott wrote and published this in 19th centuries. It’s not out of date even right now when women are still fighting against the injustice in working and living. Not only men, but all of us are meant either to chase, to achieve or to love.
