The book review on Little Women
陆韵霈
‘Little Women’ was an outstanding novel written by Louisa May Alatt,
which has widespread influence on people at home and abroad. With the
background of the American Civil War, the novel is based on the life
trivia happened in the March’s family, which describes how the four
sisters grow into maturity and independence. In the course of the
American Civil War, Mr March has to join the army, which means that Mrs
March has to raise these four children: Meg, Joe, Amy and Beth alone.
Even though they lived a poor life, Mrs March still taught her girls to
be a straightforward and kind person. In general, this book is trying to
convey the standpoint that females are able to be independence and be
their own masters to pursue the true love. First of all, while I was
reading ‘Little Women ’, I was deeply moved by the family bond between
them. When Mr March was sick in the hospital, Joe sold her beautiful
long hair for money, even if she burst into loud sobs. Joe made such
huge sacrifice to support her mother to take care of her father, which
shows her selfless love and fearless courage. When it comes to
conflicts, the former grievance is always melted like ice. Amy once
burned all the precious manuscripts that Joe had. Joe was very angry
about it at first, but she ended up being tolerant with what her spoiled
little sister did, for her mom’s advice that try with heart and soul to
master this quick temper, before it brings you greater sorrow and regret
than you have known today. And when Joe got news that Amy was married to
Laurie, she sent her wishes to them from the bottom of her heart. This
is family. This is home. It has magic to help you overcome your weakness
and grow into a more responsible and rational person. Besides, I’d like
to talk about the model education that the girls had. When it comes to
their education, Mrs March is not a specialist in education, but she is
a real educational art executor. She is the intimate friend of the
daughters and sets a good family situation when it comes to marriage.
Mrs March once said:’ Money is necessary and precious thing, but I
definitely hope you don’t consider it as the priority or the only
objective of the struggle. I’d rather you become a child from a poor but
happy family than you become a queen without a sense of calm.’ This type
of marrisge view does attract attention by being eccentric. In fact,
from my point of view, I totally agree with the author that marriage
should be based on love instead of money. As a matter of fact, under Mrs
March’s guidance, the girls did have unique opinions upon marriage. Meg
chose to be married to the poor guy: John and gave up a large amount of
heritage from her aunt. Although Amy was dying to get into the upper
society, she didn’t lose her heart. She encouraged Laurie to pull
himself together and finally got married to him. When it comes to joe, I
always think of the word: freedom. I appreciate her words: I’m so sick
of people saying that love is just all a woman is fit. She spent her
whole life on pursuing her dream to be an author. It is her independence
and confidence that I learn from her. Women they have minds and they
have souls as well as just hearts. They got ambition and they got talent
as well as just beauty. All girls can reach the land of happiness no
matter she is married or not, in spite of her wealth. The different ways
that you choose is always able to lead you to a happy ending, as long as
you try your best.
