这部小说的三个组成部分一开始都独立成篇，在不同的时期发表。最后一部分《两个梦》于一八三〇年五月在《时尚》杂志上刊载；第二部分《吕吉耶里兄弟的自白》于一八三六年十二月至一八三七年一月以《吕吉耶里兄弟的秘密》为题在《巴黎杂志》上刊载；最后问世的第一部分《加尔文派殉道者》，以《勒加缪》为题，于一八四一年四月在《世纪报》上发表。三个部分合为一篇，于一八四二年由苏弗兰书屋出版，一八四四年由克朗多夫斯基书屋发行。一八四六年十月，编入菲讷版《人间喜剧》第十五至十六卷，属“哲理研究”。小说的三个部分显然有不同的主旨，但又有其内在联系。

This book belongs to the philosophical studies from The Human Comedy. It contains three parts, including The Calvinist Martyr, The Ruggieri's Secret and The Two Dreams. These three parts are independent as well as interdependent.

Honoré de Balzac was a French novelist and playwright. His magnum opus was a sequence of short stories and novels collectively entitled Human Comedy, which presents a panorama of French life in the years after the 1815 fall of Napoleon Bonaparte.Due to his keen observation of detail and unfiltered representation of society, Balzac is regarded as one of the founders of realism in European literature. He is renowned for his multifaceted characters, who are morally ambiguous.
