Qin Terra-Cotta Warriors Tomb No. 2: The wisdom of military formations from the era of cold weapons. The Qin Terra-Cotta Warriors Tomb No. 2 is a vivid microcosm of the military layout of the Qin Dynasty. It features four types of battle formations, comprising over a thousand warriors, more than eighty chariots, and tens of thousands of bronze weapons. This showcases the Qin army’s characteristic of coordinated military units and tightly organized formations. The archer formation in the eastern section of Trench 2 is highly representative: the front row consists of 60 standing archers acting as the vanguard, while the rear eight rows comprise a total of 160 kneeling archers, creating a depth of formation. The combination of standing and kneeling positions ensures continuous shooting while also showcasing the tactical ingenuity of the Qin dynasty’s long-range military units. The chariot formation on the right side is equally well-organized, with 8 rows of 64 chariots arranged in a linear formation. Each chariot is equipped with four proportionate terracotta horses. As a heavy combat unit during that time, the chariots worked in tandem with the archers, forming a tactical combination at varying distances. These details not only reconstruct the organization and combat methods of the Qin military forces, but also reflect the maturity of the Qin military ideology – with different types of troops organized according to their functions, their formations complementing each other, and combining the long-range suppression capabilities of archers with the impact advantages of chariots. The military formation layout in Tomb No. 2 serves as both a tangible manifestation of the military power of the Qin Empire and an invaluable physical evidence for studying the tactical evolution of ancient Chinese military strategies and cold-weapon warfare.
