This passage describes the life of the Xianfeng Emperor in the late Yuanming Yuan, a splendid royal estate even in its declining years. Burdened with deep sorrow amid turbulent national conditions, Xianfeng sought comfort and entertainment within the garden. His attendants arranged various diversions for him, notably introducing a group of young Manchu women to lift his spirits. Among them, Lady Yehenara stood out and gained the emperor’s exclusive favor. She later grew into the influential Empress Dowager Cixi, who held power over the Qing Dynasty for over four decades. The romantic encounter between Xianfeng and her inside Yuanming Yuan has inspired numerous fictional works, including tales penned by Western writers. This segment reveals two key layers: Yuanming Yuan served as the emperor’s refuge from political anxiety, and it was also the birthplace of a pivotal figure that reshaped late Qing history, linking the garden’s late prosperity to the dynasty’s subsequent decline.
