There is hardly a gloomier spectacle in the world than one of those
obscure streets of London. The houses, which were old and ruinous, stood
so close together as almost to shut out the sky, and even the sunshine,
where a glimpse of it could be seen, was made dusky and dim by the smoke
of the city.

This description stuck with me a lot. Most people walking past such a street would glance away quickly, overwhelmed by how bleak everything looks, and write off the people living there as beyond help. But Raikes stops to really see their suffering. It makes me realize that genuine care starts with not turning our backs on other people’s hardship, even when their lives feel too broken to fix. The physical darkness of the slum sets up just how brave and meaningful Raikes’ kindness will turn out to be later in the story.
