Police and Praise is a short story written by Mark Twain. It tells the story of a man named Homer Simpson, who is poor and desperate. Frustrated by his inability to get arrested and sent to jail to escape his bleak life, he tries a series of extreme actions to draw the attention of the police. He eats a fancy meal in a restaurant without paying, hoping to be caught for theft. He breaks into a shop, thinking he'll be arrested for burglary. He also tries to start a fire in a vacant lot. Yet, each time, instead of being arrested, he is praised. The restaurant owner commends his good taste, the shopkeeper appreciates his business, and the fire - department commends him for quickly putting out the fire.
