In the late summer of that year we lived in a house in a village that looked across the river and the plain to the mountains. In the bed of the river there were pebbles and boulders, dry and white in the sun,and the water was clear and swiftly moving and blue in the channels. Troops went by the house and down the road and the dust they raised powdered the leaves of the trees. The trunks of the trees too were dusty and the leaves fell early that year and we saw the troops marching along the road and the dust rising and leaves, stirred by the breeze, falling and the soldiers marching and afterward the road bare and white except for the leaves. 去书内

    • Setting and Atmosphere: The landscape is initially described with natural beauty—clear blue river water, white pebbles, and rich crops on the plain. However, this peaceful scenery is constantly disrupted by the presence of war. • War Intrusion: Troops march past the house day and night, raising dust that covers the trees and road. At night, artillery flashes light up the mountains like summer lightning. The narrator hears soldiers marching, motor-tractors pulling guns, and trucks carrying ammunition and troops. • Failed Battle and Changing Seasons: Fighting occurs in the mountains, including an unsuccessful battle for a nearby mountain with chestnut forests. As autumn arrives with rain, the landscape turns desolate—leaves fall, branches become bare, and the countryside turns wet, brown, and lifeless. • Soldiers Condition: The final image depicts exhausted, muddy soldiers marching in the rain, heavily burdened with wet rifles and ammunition, their bodies so weighed down that they appear almost pregnant with their gear.
