Book Review: The Old Man and the Sea Written by Ernest Hemingway, The Old Man and the Sea is a touching classic about courage and dignity. The story focuses on Santiago, an old fisherman who fails to catch any fish for 84 days. He then goes deep into the sea and fights a huge marlin for three days. Though he beats the fish, sharks eat almost all its flesh on his way back home. He only brings a skeleton ashore, yet he never loses his spirit. The famous line “A man can be destroyed but not defeated” perfectly shows the book’s theme. It tells us real victory does not mean getting material gains, but holding on to our pride when facing hardships. The simple writing style also makes this short novel easy to understand and deeply moving.
