  Rambert was a journalist who had come to the town for his work.He was also a foreigner who had been exiled by the plague.He was not a natural rebel,he thought of himself as an ousider who had nothing to do with the plague.When the plague came,he racked his brains to leave the city in order to be reunited with his lover.Rambert did not believe in the heroism of resistance.His belief was that people shoul live and die for what they love,and that to be stuck in a small town was a departue from his faith.If he betrays his faith,he loses love.Dr.Reiux pointed out that fighting the plauge was not a matter of heroism,but of sincerity.That prompted him to change,to stay and fight the plauge.
