These few words "blankly" "vaguely" and "hollowly" all shows that Gatsby was utterly absent-minded. It seems that he was answering every question asked by Nick, but we can read from his expression and the way his intonation that he was thinking about something else. He war worrying about his meeting with Daisy. The nervousness kept his from thinking rationally and focusing on the thing he was doing.
