The housekeeper is just a reflection of those petty bourgeoisie, fake, wicked, selfish and cruel. I feel very sad for the main character.

‘The Furnished Room’, mainly talks about a tragedy in a furnished room among the red brick district of the lower West Side. In that period, the people were restless, shifting and fugacious. So they had a hundred homes and often were transient forever. That’s the background of the story.

A young man, the main figure of the story, asked for a room which was renting. Then, he came in the 12th house with the housekeeper. The room he will live in was furnished, but dirty. He asked the housekeeper whether she saw Miss Vashner, but the housekeeper disappointed him. He then checked the room and found the same smell as Vashner’s. He felt surprised and searched for her. But he finally didn’t find her. He hurried to the housekeeper and asked some questions about the former tenants. But he didn’t get any information about his lover. So he felt dispirited and suicided in the bed of the room. In the end of the story, the housekeeper just told the truth: Miss Vashner had died in the same bed.

In the book, the most impressive part I think is the description of the background. The writer mainly wrote the dark and dirty environment of the house, which built a dismal and dangerous atmosphere. It made the end of the story natural and logical. I think I can learn a lot from it.

In the book, the house stood for the dark atmosphere of the society, and the housekeeper stood for the rich, while the man and Miss Vashner stood for the poor. They were also dreamers. They had their dream but cannot make it come true. That the result of the dark society. The people like them may finally have the same end as theirs. So the book satirized the society which prevents the poor from being rich. And it also appeals us to pursue our dream, though the society is not suitable.

The end of the story made me sad.The love between the young man and the women was real and pure, but finally both of them choose to end their life in the same way. That's because the landlord did not  care the young man and the woman's death, the only thing she cared was to rent her room and making profits. From that we can see the greedy and callosity in humanity, and feel the rotten society of that time.

The ending of the story leave a deep imapct in my mind. I have mixed feelings of sorrow, wrath, disapointment and so on. I don't know what make the gril commit a suicide, but I guess it is the dark side of society, the shadow of human's heart making her disapointing to the world, evev love can not save her. The young man's death seems dramatic, he died in the same place, with the same way with his gril. I can not conclude that who kill the young man. The loss of his gril, the lie of the housekeeper, the disgusting atmosphere of the society, or the neglectance of human lives in that time.

The purpose of the author is obivous, an irony of the money-oriented atmosphere of that time.

I feel so sorry for the man. When he first move into the room, he can feel that the woman he has been looking for was here, but he just can not find any evidence. But sadly the truth is, the housekeeper lied to him so that he would rent the house, and the dear one to him has killed her self in this very room. In a society that is driven by money, humanity is overlooked easily, and people who has pure heart can be hurt deeply.

It's also standardized O.Henry's ending. It's surprising but also reasonable. If the young man knows that he and the girl he has found for a long time both killed themselves in the same place, maybe he will leave no regert.Well, who knows?

The ending is so surprised and we know that the woman the young man finding all over the world had chosen to end her life on the bed which the young man was lying on .The landlord cheated the man, but the man also gave the landlord a surprise. What would the landlord felt when she found that the man killed himself on the same bed?

In order to live a good life, the landlords blasted the exploitation of tenants, at devoid of humanity to conceal the truth, even the talk of the demise of life as a live chat when, vividly demonstrated the landlords addicted to money-hungry, cold cruel exploitation of nature, let people reading heart felt a strong shock and impact, the use of irony indeed achieved excellent results.
