In 1861, he began to join in army activities and then he was in command of the 21st Illinois Infantry. Latter, he got more experience and commanded larger forces in the field. He won many battles. Although many ministers didn’t support it, Lincoln consisted to choose Grant to defeat Lee. With the disadvantages of Lee’s army members and the shortage of goods and the advantages of Grant’s useful experience, Grant finally defeated the Confederate Army. During the post-war negotiations, Grant showed his generousness to Lee and granted his request of keeping horses of Lee’s soldiers. Hence, Lee considered Grant as a gentleman.
