In chapter 8 Hume does not seem to make his point directly. It is also possible that the translation is not clear in some places. Hume thinks that freedom is the ability to act or not to act according to the decision of the will. In the face of determinism, Hume argues that this theory leads to the absurd conclusion that either God is not supremely good and is responsible for our evil, or that our evil acts are not themselves evil. Either one is absurd. For if God is supremely good, then He could not possibly cause us to sin. One argument holds that the gods simply absolve the greatest plagues and do their best to give us the greatest happiness. But this argument is baseless.
