What the author wants to express is up to what he has experience. In my opinion, the author considers death to be the best thing because in his ages, the whole socity is too black to live.

Death can't possibly be a gift. So I guess the author is satirizing pleasure, love, fame and riches. I guess he is tryig to say that these things mean nothing. They can easily disappear. If we choose these four things, we'd rather choose death.
