  As far as I am concerned, the author maybe wanted to express that if we female did not change ourselves, we would be fooled with and looked down upon by the male forever and we female would not gain the equality of male in the true sense. After reading this book, I thought I would read more by this author and encourage others to read this book for the reason that Katherine Mansfield’s writing style was succinct as well as meticulous, which often reveal some profound theme that can set me thinking a lot.

  Why such a few praise words can drive her so crazy that she becomes no longer the"kind" woman as she claims?The reason still underlies the background of the society she lives in.Rosemary becomes so anxious because once her husband loves another woman,she will lose everything she has.So after driving the girl away,she"done her hair,darkened her eyes a little and put on her pearl."Her intention to do such delicate makeup is that she is eager to hold her position in the family and in her husband's heart.She knows that she should totally depend on her husband.

  We can see clearly from the previous text that the reason why Rosemary suddenly changed her mind by choosing to care for the poor girl is to get thrilled and to gain face in front of her friends; and at last, she gave money(at first 5 bills but 3 bills in the end)to the girl in order to let her go, which is just because Rosemary's husband said the girl was pretty, and she envied it.From all these, we can see the woman's hypocrisy.
