“Philip,” she whispered, and she pressed his head against her bosom, “am I pretty?” 去书内

"Am I pretty?"this question pointed at the theme---the large gap and discrepancy of position between men and women at that time.

Ephron alludes to the cataclysmic events about to occur, pitting sense against instinct as Philip leaves not one but two home fires burning brightly behind him. All of the period detail is correct right down to the last street lamp, but the book reads more like a treatment than a fully imagined novel. Ephron gives us a rich situation and a carefully drawn setting filled with recognizable types. But she gives us no character. Even for a lightly satiric period romance, this cup of tea is too thin and watery.

I so wanted to like this book. The writing was great, the story well told. Unfortunately the story itself was lacking. The mysterious Eleanor was as deep as a sheet of paper and Phillip's attraction only skin deep, as that is all he could comment on was her appearance. This was a romance novel without any bodice ripping... The pity of it, the writing was well done.

Having read a lot of romance novels in my day, often you get a twisting story and a resolution of sorts at the end and the characters and story are all one dimensional. But, usually they are a melodramatic-fun one-dimensional and that is all you are expecting. Here there is so much unexplored.

You don't know what lead Eleanor to the spot where Rosemary first saw her. You don't understand Rosemary at all. You don't understand why Phillip was so taken by Eleanor except for her looks. You don't know why Jane switched sides, or her and Dora's story. You don't know what happened to Phillip during the war. There is just so much unexplored that could be mined for a much heartier full story.

At the end of the story, Rosemary asks for money to buy a antique box, but then arrives at her true concern: whether she is pretty.  In my opinions, Rosemary ‘s finance and emotion are tightly controlled by her husband. What's worse, she doesn't realize this point. Rosemary tried to exploit her good-looking appearance to control her husband, while her husband exploited her jealousy to control her. From the story, I cannot feel the affection between these couples. Instead I can see the relationship of interest between them. Rosemary needed Phillip’s fortune while Phillip enjoyed Rosemary’s beauty. It seems that they can also be happy. However, they are not unique for each other. Lacking true love, their marriage cannot go far. And perhaps this is a purpose the author hope to express in this passage.

This sentence exposes the hypocrisy of Rosemary. She took this girl to home just because she wanted others think she was kind-hearted .But the words of Philip made her jealous and expelled this poor girl .

After reading this story I may say that Rosemary is somehow crazy to me. What she did is really weird and really I can say childish, selfish and unacceptable. She is also a gudgeon. She is trampling others' self esteem and she doesn't even know that what she did was wrong.I think this is really ridiculous.

Women jealous when her lover praise another woman. The pity on a poor girl won't go long against the demanding for love from her husband. The woman know how to deal with all this, and also use her grace appearence to grab her husband's eyes and also help her buy her loved items. However, it just seems pathetic to me that women in those days, they just live for pleasing man.
