One character is Fagin, the cunning leader of a gang of child pickpockets. His scheming nature make him a fascinating antagonist. His manipulation of the vulnerable children. Bill Sikes Fagin's brutal associate and the abusive partner of Nancy. His violent nature crimes shock and intrigue the reader. Yet, there is also a sense of pathos in his character, as we see him as a product of his environment, trapped in a cycle of crime and violence. However, it is Nancy, both a criminal accomplice and a victim, loyal to her lover Bill Sikes. Her ultimate sacrifice in saving Oliver. My reaction is fascination and empathy. While their actions are often deplorable, there is a sense of humanity and complexity in their characters that makes them more interesting and relatable than the purely good characters. This complexity allows for a more nuanced understanding of human nature. While the good characters in "Oliver Twist" are admirable, it is the bad characters who often capture our imaginations.
