After this, the colonel left, and Elinor very soon passed on the details
of the conversation to her sister. The effect was not quite what she had
hoped. Marianne listened attentively, and appeared to accept
Willoughby's guilt. She no longer avoided the colonel when he came to
the house, and talked to him in a gentle, pitying voice. But she seemed
even more depressed, now that Willoughby's good character had been lost,
as well as his heart.
