The author seems to regret the passing of the Greek spirit, but he beautifies the life of the Greek city-states. In fact, Greek democracy is a one-sided democracy. Women, foreigners, children and slaves cannot have citizenship, so all decision-making power is in the hands of only a small number of people, who will never consider the interests of others. From this chapter, I can see that history is the history written by human beings. Van Loon’s view on the last Egyptian queen and Cleopatra are very different from those I read in another history book before. The author’s evaluation is partial to praise, and believes that she seduced the invaders with her beauty to help Egypt continue its rule, but another book records that she seduced the Roman invaders only to survive and continue to enjoy the treatment of the queen, and only used her as a foil tool to show Augustus’ ambition.
