Jack' character

In this book, Jack was a bold man who unarmed caught a large centipede on a lady’s head. He used to suggest sending lepers to an seclude on their behalf. It occurs to me that Jack is a man who is concerned about individuals in trouble and kind-hearted. But at the end of the book, a scene shocked me when he hurried to search for a doctor because Lucy, a leper who is gorgeous, bid farewell to him in a intimate way. He was afraid of being infected with lepriasis. I repute that truly philanthropic people never make this move.
