The Gift Of The Magi

As a matter of fact, I read this story twice and I want to share my feelings with you. When I first read this story on the test, I was 15 years old. At that time, I felt extremely desperate and I considered it as a total tragedy. A young couple spared no effort to buy the ideal Christmas present even though they gave up something precious because of the deep love between them. All after all, their presents can not play a role to make their lives better or against the original intention of giving the gift The fact that material poverty absolutely defeats economic perfection make me sorrowful. From then on, I believed that wealth guarantees happiness. Due to fateful coincidence, I read this story the second time in this term and had a completely different understanding now. Because after I read this story, I thought about the title for a while and took a tumble to understand that the truly meaning of The Gift of the Magi is making them feel each other’s love by giving gifts instead of combs and cascade. The writer never thought love before material is so helpless and fragile. The spirit that the story want to deliver to readers is “if two persons in despair still cling to each other’s love，then love will bring hope, strength, comfort and support even everything for them. That kind of mental stimulation will make up for the lack of material and let them go together and forever hand in hand. The novel reveals that social reality does not rely on sermons, but uses the development and change of characters’ emotional as the context to inspire readers to touch and feel the characters with tragic colors. In a society where love can be traded, the true and deep love between the two young is full of the writer's idealism. It is not ordinary pen to write about the evil of money in this society, but to write about the poetry of this dark scene, to praise the cleverness. Therefore, the works give people not depression and gloom, but the pursuit of beauty and attachment, thus leading the reader to the noble realm.
