The Devil and Tom Walker
In today’s society, many people hold the view that money is everything, and all they want is more and more money. In fact, however, being greedy & selfish may leads to destruction. There is a story named The Devil and Tom Walker, written by Washington Irving, which suggests this idea. In the story, Tom Walker and his wife are very greedy and selfish, and eventually they died tragically.
Tom is a greedy, selfish and heartless man; all he cares about is his soul and money. Tom starves his horse, even after he becomes wealthy—he is too greedy to give it food even when he have enough money to do so. He doesn’t care about the safety of his wife after she disappears for two days, instead, he went out for her is all because she took the valuables away--Tom wants to own it. Moreover, he is merciless with his”friend” poor land jobber even he has gain a lot from him. It’s because he has no true friends, all he cares about is money and how to benefit him. In addition, to prevent him from going to the hell, he tries to cheat the devil with an outward show—going to church, pretend to be very faithful and carrying bible around. He is not truly regret, for he continues usurping money from others. He thought he could escape from being taken by the devil, that’s the only reason for his “faithful” action. In order to get the treasures, he makes a bargain with the devil and give up his soul to the devil in exchange, but after a few years he tried to cheat with devil by showing his “faithful and regret”. In return, the devil cheats him—after he saying”the devil takes me if I have made a farthing!” the devil comes over and takes him away. Eventually, his greedy caused his destruction.
Meanwhile, the story also talks about another miserly character—Tom’s wife. She is mean, violent and also, very greedy. She has been cheating with Tom—she even fights with Tom in order to get what she wants. She urges Tom to go and have bargain with the devil, though the devil would take his soul—she doesn’t care about his husband, she only wants the treasure. When Tom refuses her permission, she goes to the devil by herself—to own the treasure. When she meets the devil, however, she doesn’t want to give up anything but want to get the treasure—so she has a fight with the devil. We could infer this from the hair of the devil and deeply stamped tree, and we know this action makes devil angry and kills her. In fact, her greedy kills herself.
The author shows how greedy would destruct people though the description of both Tom and his wife, for they are both greedy and that leads their roads to the devil. Tom is taken by the devil because his merciless, selfish and greedy—he cheats the devil so the devil cheats him. Similarly, his wife’s death is all because of her violent, rude and greedy—if she doesn’t go to the devil for the treasure, she will not going to die. Therefore, don’t be greedy. Share your money and love with someone in need since you have enough money to live a satisfying life. Always think more about others than ourselves. These things will lead to a peaceful and happy life.
