During the time Pip has dealings with the gentlemen in high office, there is a gentleman he dislikes very much, Drummle. Drummle is the most richest gentleman in England, he is also a shameless man with bad reputation. Estella then gets married with Drummle. Before they are married, Pip tells her how much he loves her and asks her not to marry Drummle. But Estella says: "That is meant to be. I have no heart, I won't be his reward but his punishment." In my perspective, Estella has been brought in this way, Pip won't be happy even Estella is married with her. That is meant to be like planned. If Estella fails, it's not her fault. If Estella succeeds, it's not her honour.
Finally, the truth is revealed. The escaped convict called Magwitch comes to Pip's home one night and tells him that he is the donor who makes him a gentleman. So scared and astonishing Pip is. Magwitch was sent for life, if he comes back, the only result is death. So Pip must try to help him hide and plan to send him out of England. But Pip fails, Magwitch is caught and sentenced to death. Until then Pip owns nothing and he is heavily in debt. Pip can't pay for his debt and he is in badly ill. At this most difficult time, Joe turns up and takes good care of Pip, also pays for his debt. I think that's quite a contrast, Joe is just a blacksmith, but he has a noble and selfless spirit. While these gentlemen are unkind and selfish.
