The general idea of The Spirit of the Chinese is to unfold the spiritual life of the Chinese people, to promote the value of Chinese traditional culture, and to advocate the theory of saving the West by Confucian civilization.
The author Gu Hongming who lived in the late Qing Dynasty was well versed in Chinese and Western culture.
In the era in which Gu Hongming lived, the spirit of the traditional Chinese people was suppressed by the so-called advanced Western civilization.The writer witnessed this tragedy, being looking to find something valuable from the tradition cutural to enhance national self-estee and shape progressive Chinese.
Biased as some of the writer’s viewpoints,it is still worth reading in that not only did it reveals patriotism but it is also brimming with wisdom and speculation.It is through the appreciation of literary works that we reflect on history and foresee the future.This book provides us with a good choice.Only when we are buried in it can we really harvest something.
