When it comes to the central content of the book, about what the "spirit of the Chinese people" is, the author's summary of the characteristics of the Chinese people has to present a strong partiality nationalism. Even now, the image of some Chinese people who are greedy for money and with poor quality is still criticized by the international community. It is not difficult to speculate what kind of impression the international community have on us due to the old China, which had not popularized modern education. However, as one of the most influential specialized publications about Chinese civilization, this book was not honest about obvious defects directly. Instead, it described the characters with the excuse that "real Chinese people live a life of affection or humanity, a life of soul" as a logical conclusion, "This actually explains why Chinese people are indifferent about dirty environment, material inconvenience and lack of elegance. The author hidden the reality with ideal imagination and deliberately avoid the true national character caused by historical accumulation. As we can see from Confucius, the pursuit of spiritual life is not an excuse for bad environment and vulgar behavior, but it should become a driving force to improve the environment and enhance self-cultivation. As a great Confucian scholar like the author, it is not as good as the outline of the Confucian Analects. Instead, he conceals the inexplicable superiority of "spiritual life", perhaps by using one extreme to confront another extreme helplessness. "Chinese people live a spiritual life", the book also leads to another ironic point of view, "Chinese language is also a spiritual language", and points out that foreigners who have been educated in European intelligence, think and speak in the language of mind or intelligence, will have more difficulties in learning Chinese than uneducated children, while ignoring that children's brain is better at learning Chinese than adults'.
