Just Go Ahead
Initially I have to say, in my childhood I don’t have a taste for foreign books, including Around the World in 80 days, since their cultures were hard for me to understand. However, when I was in high school some foreign cartoons and TV shows hit me, directing me to the world of imagination. Now the opportunity finally comes for me to pick up the book again. I hardly felt regretful, but appreciate and blessed.
Let’s begin with the structure of the book. In the beginning writer gives a brief introduction of Phileas Fogg, a peaceful or even cold, extremely punctual and strange man. I was amazed when knowing there could exist such kind of man, and felt absurd about it, but eventually I know he also had a warm heart.
Then, they casually making the bet did amuse me, since I personally think the decision of touring the world is solemnly made before reading the book. After that, the writer started to tell the journey’s story. It must be well carefully conceived and designed, for time was well calculated to save the 80th day. I could do nothing but admire the writer’s logic and horizon.
Now let’s talk about the characters. Phileas Fogg is the main character. At the first sight of him you might consider him as a man merely keen on bet and money. But as the plot processes, you’ll find him willing to sacrifice some valuable time, just for saving his servant, even a stranger------Aouda------at that time. Sometimes he was generous and good tempered, as he forgot Passepartout though Passepartout indirectly led to his “failure”. But sometimes he is fierce but brave, for he accepted a duel with Colonel Stamp Proctor without hesitation, and locked a captain to occupy his ship and fight with storm, etc.
As for Passepartout, he was strong , brave but mature, and kept in making troubles in the journey. However, were not for him the journey might be badly boring. And Aouda, though she didn’t do something, but she gave Phileas Fogg hope at the close of the story. All characters are complex and important, they carried the story forward throughout.
This book was defined as a science fiction, but carried numerous cultural knowledge. It seems that the definition is inappropriate. However, I personally think the book is worth it. It’s nothing less than the incredible imagination that counts. I still remember a line in Three Body 3 :”No one is more lucky than you though you are bound to die, cause they have never looked out of the sky even for a second.” Exactly.
Taking an adventure and proudly die, or living a cozy but boring life for a lifetime? Mr. Fogg chose the former one, so do I. Life is immeasurable, invaluable, and filled with possibility. Why should we waste our life in meaningless chores? When opportunities come, whatever a business trip or something else, just take it------simply because we want to prove we are young forever.
In conclusion, the story is wonderful and characters are rich, but it’s the theme itself that moved me. When you lose something, don’t stay sorrowful and just go ahead, because you never know what life hold of marvel and surprise for you.
