Les Miserable
impxx
Les Miserable is the representative work of Victor Hugo, which I would
like to think of as a photograph of the people´s real miserable life in
eighteenth century rather than just a novel. As we can find the unfair
judicial system and the desperate life of the poor people at that time
when we see Jean Valjean was sentenced to serve five years in prison
just for a piece of bread stolen to save children, find the good and
evil of human nature from the bishop and the tenadiers, and find
teenagers throw themselves into the revolution to save the
country.Extreme anger hit me when I see the tenadiers abuse little
Cosette, when I see Fantine was bullied by wicked women and when I see
Jean Valjean was excluded although he had dond so many good deeds. The
ugly side of human nature frighten me. However, I began to think if the
wicked people are born to be evil and I find it is not.The wicked people
may also live a miserable life for which they take the misfortunes of
others as their own happiness or they are be bound by traditional idea.
Javert is a good example. He protect the legal system, which we think is
always right. But when the legal system is not so fair, stubbornly
defending it will destroy real justice. It lead to the collapse of his
spiritual world when Javert finally find it. How could we tell he is a
good person or a bad guy?The society was miserable, but hope always
exists. Lots of teenagers set foot on the road of Republicanism to push
the country to a totally new bright world. Marius is a representative of
these teenagers. Affected by his grandfather and father, he experience a
great struggle of which party to choose. Finally he and many other
teenagers find the right way, devote into it and bring bright future to
people suffered from misery and poor, to the dark society and to the
lunatic country. They make the sacrifice of the old generation
meaningful. It is obvious that a great change of the society need effort
and sacrifice of several generations and must experience hardships and
hurtful thoughts´ changes. Only strong will and firm belief can be the
weapon to fight. What Victor Hugo want to tell us by showing the scenes
he saw during his exile life in Canarsie island, I think, is not only
his condemnation of the injustice and sympathy for bottom people but
also his praise of people´s courage to face heavy suffering and the
boldness to chase a better life embodied by Jean Valjean and Marius,
which push this work to such a high status. So, when we face
difficulties in life, maybe we can find answers in this book as it tell
you that you are not so miserable compared with the characters in it and
what qualities you need to arm yourself. We should also have the
eyesight to find misery around us as Victor Hugo and make some changes
for our world.
