Introdution

In the A Room of One’s Own, Woolf stated the opinion about "If women want to write, they must have a room of their own, and they must earn 500 pounds a year.”The whole speech manuscript is filled with delicate metaphor which perfectly shows her colorful mental world.She expresses her determination to defend women’s right to fight for their freedom and engage in writing independently in a humorous stroke from which I have seen a strong sense of feminism.And from my perspective,it is a successful work of the female literature.

Background information

At the end of the nineteenth century,the social environment was immersed in an aura of male-domination where women’s chastity had been a tool of men to manipulate their will.In this condition,women were afraid of violate this criterion of being an adequate woman,which had gradually put themselves into the male’s value.Under this twisted situation,women were satisfied to act like the “angel in the house”,following the secular rules,just like the character of Beth Ann in the Why Women Kill.

Woolf put forward the idea of “Women should have a room of their own”,which is more than a material support.A room of one’s own is also a place that gives them a sense of comfort deep inside their heart.Woolf took Austen as an example,Austen had struggled in the tough writing condition where she were supposed to undertake masses of housework and she did not have her own study,for which she had to curl up in the public living room to create novels.Even worse,sometimes she should stop writing to work on housework.She is just one of the cases of women writers in Victorian era in which women’s writing environment were much worser than men.And their love of writing should be hidden in case they would be the laughingstock of others.

Besides,Woolf also came up with the idea to protect the own “spirit” of women.In the passage,what interests me is that most of the work depicting about women is created by men,for which the women lack her own successive writing tradition and public thinking about women is more likely to be lead by men.From her perspective,women should be offered better conditions to write and avoid to be interrupted by something else when they are writing.When women obtain their right to do what they want to do,the female literature would be more prosperous and their own “spirit” would stand out one day.

Evaluation

As for me,Woolf’s idea enlightens me a lot and exactly elaborates my opinion.Nowadays,women’s living conditions have become better and better than before.Their sensitivity and wisdom have been fully shown in the works that women writers creat.In life,I think I am not supposed to be bothered by the stereotypes people imposing on women or men,for there is a much wider world for me to explore.Maybe I should cherish the hard-won freedom of women and keep on chasing for the higher development in my area,using my own achievement to push forward the Affirmative Action.
