After Reading LM
Les Miserables is a distinguished book talking about the great love in those dark days. The first time I read it, it moved me to tears. I spent almost every spare time to read it. It’s the first wonderful book I ever got stuck on.
Jean Valjean was a hard-working toiler, but in the consideration of 7 siblings to raise, it’s hard for him to make ends meet. Eventually, he broke the window to steal the bread in a starving night, due to which he was sentenced to 19 years in prison. Almost 20 years of living in the shadows deprived him of his original goodness and simplicity, while Bishop Myriel influenced Jean Valjean with his own mercy. And Jean saved a little girl of a whore who couldn’t afford to raise her until the girl grew up and fell in love with handsome Marius.
So here comes the question, was the world in Les Miserables full of misery? For me, that’s no. Speaking of good and evil, the bishop, Fantine, and especially Jean Valjean, were all good men. When Jean Valjean emerged from the dark prison which had surrounded him for nineteen years, he was not happy. People suspected him, loathed him, the tavern refused to let him in, and the innkeeper turned him out. After a long journey, his stomach was empty, but he had nowhere to go. Fortunately, he met the kind bishop Myriel. The good bishop not only gave him food, but also provided him with a comfortable room, and even forgave him when he stole the silver dishes in order to escape, and gave him a pair of expensive silver candlesticks -- "you are no longer a bad man, but use these silver dishes to be a decent man." At length I believed that man could be changed. The bishop had deeply affected jean valjean with his magnanimity and charity, given him infinite hope and made him repent and begin a new life. He is finally willing to help others ,and he was loved by the people and became a respected mayor.
In the face of and poverty, some people will be like Thenardier, they are selfish, greedy and mean. In the face of the temptation of profit, they will deceive and even persecute others. Such people are not uncommon. They will do anything to get what they want. But happily, in reality, there is another kind of person. They have a fair, just, selfless and kind heart. Our society needs such people.
Les miserables is not only a delicately written portrait of life in the lowest strata of capitalist society, but also a portrait of love, good and evil. I can't help thinking about the end of the story
“Is jean valjean really dead?”
"No, he has erected a monument of goodness in the hearts of men with his life."
All I want to say is that each one is created equal. To keep a true, kind and beautiful heart, the world will become infinitely better.
