All about love

Ivellios

Love, is always considered as a main theme of this book------the uncle’s love to  nephew, the mother’s love to  daughter  and friends  love, lovers  love...... All this precious quality of humanity seems even more precious in that time of friction, conflict and revolution.

The first main character of the book, Jean, appears to be an uncle who was caught for stealing food for his nephew, he is full of anger, full of hate to the whole world. He curses the judge, curses the god and even curses his own life. After being imprisoned for years, Jean then meets a sympathetic and noble godfather who kindly serves him with shelter and food and even protect him from the guards after knowing Jean s stealing his own silver. Jean has been touched and determined to change. We could say that godfather s universal fraternity for humanity first bring the love theme to us readers and light the fire of humanity in Jean s heart and mind.

If we say the god father who brings out the love theme and teaches Jean to be kind and express his love and sympathy to humanity, then Fantine, another character who is as important as the godfather to this story, enhances the theme and leaves someone whom Jean can devotes his family love in. Cosette, Fantine s daughter, who is then raised by Jean, is widely considered as a different Fantine, because they share too many similarities------both beautiful, pure and sincere. But they have such different results, which lead us to think what makes the difference. As far as I m concerned, it is mainly caused by that time of chaos and turbulence, which makes lives seem random and without future. However, the others  love to Cosette also makes a difference------Mother s love from Fantine, Father s love from Jean and lover s love from Marius.

Another vivid character is Javert, the police officer who has a extremely powerful belief in justice and laws. His existence successfully shows the contradiction of that time to readers------The evil are protected by laws and the kind are be chased by police, which is a tremendous satire. Unfortunately, buried in guilt for Jean and doubt for laws and his duty, the brave and just officer Javert chooses death to relieve himself from the dirty and ridiculous world.

After years of hiding and escaping, Jean at last feels relief because of his love and devotion to Cosette, which finally brushes away his own guilt and sin. Being satisfied with life and afraid to implicate Cosette and Marius, he decides to leave himself. This old man, spending half of his life to rage, to shout and to curse, just because he has to take the sin he should not have taken, but he then spend another half of his life to care, to love and for redemption, just because he wants to fulfill his promise he could not have keep. After years, Cosette is not only a promise for Jean, but also a family, a daughter for him. It s not a story or at least not only a story about relief and redemption but also one about love------The most precious quality of humanity.
