After reading the book The Sorrow of Young Werther by Gothe, I deeply
feel sorry for what happened to Werther. Werther met a girl named
Charlotte at a dance. In the constant relationship between them, Werther
fell deeply in love with Charlotte, but Charlotte was engaged to someone
else. The dilemma of whether to continue to pursue Charlotte made him
miserable. After that, Werther had a conflict with the feudal society
and felt that the future was hopeless. In the end, he chose to commit
suicide and wrote in his letter that“ Charlotte, since the first hour I
saw you, how impossible have I found it to leave you.” In my opinion,
Werther is a rational and free man. He did not selfishly take Charlotte
away from her husband. Werther's sorrow is a longing for love, which is
precisely the sorrow of many young people now. They may meet a person
they like, and then they come to understand that loving someone doesn't
mean possessing. In addition to this, the bondage of feudal society was
also one of the sources of Werther's sorrow. He doesn't want to suppress
his interest and be trapped in bondage, so his sorrow is inevitable.
Maybe one day in the future, we will be Werther. I hope that when facing
sorrows, we can follow our own inner thoughts.
