BOOK REVIEW
Arrogance and prejudice fade from love
——the book review of <Pride and Prejudice>
< Pride and Prejudice> is a classic of Jane Austin. It tells the story of the love and spouse selection of five sisters Elizabeth Bennet, the daughter of the English squire in the early 19th century.
Mr. Bennet has five precious daughters, and Mrs. Bennet has broken her heart over their marriage. New neighbor Bingley king is handsome. At a dance, she fell in love with Bennett's beautiful eldest daughter Jane at first sight. Bingley's best friend, Darcy, was also at the ball. He was handsome and dignified, but he was arrogant. He thought that they were not worthy of being dancing partners, including Jane's sister Elizabeth. Elizabeth, with a strong sense of self-esteem, overheard Darcy's comments on her, and was disgusted. However, she did not know that, because of her true nature, opinionated, and energetic, after an accident, Darcy had fallen in love with her in silence. Elizabeth also felt Darcy's respect and love for her and agreed to his proposal.
Initial, prejudice makes Elizabeth unable to accept Darcy, and arrogance makes Darcy unable to fall in love with Elizabeth. Once prejudice arises, it will establish an inherent stereotype system in our hearts, so that we can’t objectively look at what is happening before us, and on the contrary, we will be convinced of what we think is the "truth". Only by maintaining reason can we suppress the prejudice caused by our strong emotions when the "first impression" is not very pleasant. Only by maintaining reason can we think and reflect on ourselves and eliminate our arrogance. This shows that pride and prejudice are hallucinogens in love, but reason and honesty are the propellant and guarantee of love.
“Over the past 100 years, the renovation of the taste of English literature has affected the reputation of almost all writers, except Shakespeare and Jane Austin.” Edmund Wilson, a famous American literary critic, used to speak highly of Jane Austin. In fact, Elizabeth is the epitome of Jane Austin. In Elizabeth's eyes, her love and life are not subordinate to money and social status. What she wants is respect and true love. What she pursues is women's independence and freedom. It expresses Jane Austen's perseverance in love and the call for female independent personality.
In this world, arrogance and prejudice are not opponents of love at all. Pride and prejudice will not let love to disappear after encountering it. On the contrary, they will only become love captives. At the same time, it also teaches us that the best love is equality and respect, tolerance and understanding.
