LIVE IN PEACE
Walden is a collection of essays written by Henry David Thoreau from America in 1854, which has gain great population and been translated into many languages and editions.Walden records the free and relaxing days in which Thoreau lived close to Walden,a deep and peaceful lake.In this book, the author talked about the surroundings, including the neighbourhood, the animals, the seasons and the environment. What is more important is that the feeling and thinking Thoreau shared in Walden:noble and free spirit.Thoreau does not purse too much materialistic satisfaction. He only spend little energy on farming and building his small but solid house. It took most of his days to approach nature or various people, which occurred to him his special philosophy of living. That’s why the book can inspire many readers and even build their new values.
Walden focus on the restrictions of human society and the wonderful nature.Thoreau criticized the behaviors that chasing a much more comfortable life conditions and praised those who dare to look for and understand unknown things. He thought the rich one who prepared ice in winter for summer drinking is a bored man. However he has built a tough friendship with a poet who travel around.Thoreau liked reading because he held the view that it is a training which made him be a better one.Thoreau showed us the beauty of nature because he regarded nature as the true reality, which is worth chasing through his whole life.
Thoreau always adduces some quotation from other articles, which includes Lun Yu.Lun Yu is a book which records a Chinese sage’s quotations, whose name is Kong Fuzi. This book expresses Kong Fuzi’s education on virtue.Kong Fuzi emphasized spirit is beyond price.Walden has the same subject with Lun Yu,which is rich in mind but poor in life. For example,Kong Fuzi once said:I do not mind dying in the evening if I had heard hows and whys in the morning while Thoreau agreed that he would be happy if he heard something interesting, even though he lived in a small house. However, these two books also have difference.Lun Yu contains much more principles than Walden and it is more serious than Walden in the content.
As an university student,I have been always learning the importance of noble and free spirit, which is the bright side of human. However,as I live longer,I have noticed that there are still many adults who just pursuing materialistic satisfaction, even betraying their original intentions about their aspirations. For example, there used to be some officials who originally want to build a better city but consequently became corrupt and greedy.Money and power are so important that they have attracted more and more people to abandon their honesty and kindness as human. In fact, life is hard for most of us,but whatever we are short of,we should keep a pure mind and have at least one simple spiritual pursuit because it is what makes us human. In Walden,Thoreau is poor but happy. He prefers nature to money. That's why he can live without restrictions.Nowadays, everyone can also live in Thoreau's way as long as he knows what is temporary and what is worth chasing through his whole life.
In a word,Walden teaches me:live but not just live.
