Holmes
The motifs of this book consists of three parts: human and ego, human and society, human and nature. However, I think this book mainly discuss the theme of human and ego and leaves many principles for us to learn.
From the perspective of “human and ego”, the most important one principle I want to mention is that “You see but you do not observe.”
The old saying is that knowledge is power. What Sherlock Holmes teaches us is that the power of observation creates knowledge that leads to more power. We often see but we do not observe. Holmes was a sensible person and at the same time he was talented. The author did describe and emphasize his magnificent intellect, but the most stunning feature is that Holmes can always evaluate cases acutely to decide the real wrongdoer according to the combination of his careful observation and knowledge. He investigated crimes with a footprint, queer behaviors of the servant and other details in the second tale. And then, the truth came naturally to him. As for us, we must need to observe our life form cellar to rafter if we want to find out what the essence of life is in our declining age. Therefore, Let’s do an observer rather than a looker-on.
