The impression of this novel
This novel described a tragic story that a boy ignored emotionally by his parents finally fell his parents' of flaunting their status. Morgan·Moreen was a sensitive, precious and sickly boy in eleven years old, who lived in a middle-class family. However, he didn't get love and affection from his parents. His parents worshipped status, money and authority so that they regard Morgan as a tool of comparison in thesociety. They threw this "encumbrance" to Pemberton, who was a private teacher and didn't receive any money from Morgan's parents. Morgan felt love and affection from Pemberton, which made him crave for leaving home. But finally they didn't succeed because of the economic problem. A few years later, Morgan' family declined so that they had to commit Morgan to Pemberton's care. However, too much emotion of excitement made Morgan's heart stop forever. Henry James not only wanted to tell us a boy's tragic story, but also wanted to take this story to reflect the dark society at that time. After the US entered the industrial age, the climate of worshiping money and status was full of this society, which led that plenty of children couldn't receive love and affection from their twisted growing up. The author hoped this novel can sober more families to recognize the realite and give their children deserving love and affection.
