The Pupil tells the story of a tutor who tries his best to help his
students in spite of difficulties. The morons were an American family
that roamed Europe. Their egos outstrip their financial capabilities,
and their lifestyles are supported by lies, cheating, and billing. It
was no different when they found a tutor for their young son -- they
hired him under false pretenses and did not pay him. Pemberton, the
governess, found himself attracted to the clever, world-weary boy and
wanted to help him escape the family's wild life. However, pemberton
himself was penniless and could not work without a salary. Morgan's life
was short, and he was always ignored by his parents and lost the warmth
of his family. He would rather trust a tutor without blood relationship
than stay with his family and stubbornly maintain the family's sense of
honor. Henry James tore down the elegant tradition of the upper class,
challenged the "family angel" and "gentle parent-child
relationship" of the Victorian era, and exposed the hypocrisy and
greed of the upper class.
