What are expectations
孔丹婷
There are a few round characters in this novel. Pip, an innocent young
boy with kindness, still failed to resist the temptation when facing the
fortune and the upper class. He rioted in that hypocritical world and
was ashamed of the “low” manners of his old friend and relative Joe. But
virtue and conscience still remained. Knowing that his benefactor was a
convict, in spite of his aversion, he still protected Magwitch and kept
company with him till the end. Pip were longing for fortune and his
love. That is his great expectations. But what if he never met her? What
if the criminal he had helped had not send him to London for higher
education? He would still be a little boy who was dreaming to be a
blacksmith like his brother-in-law. Then everything would be different.
This book reveals a social problem:If we never possess anything, we will
not mind we lost some thing. since we don’t want to be very rich ,we
will not feel despond because poor. However, who will never possess
anything and lose anything? As a result,we are Pips, constantly suffering
possession and loss.
