Review of the Pupil
北萝
I think it’s a charming story full of ambiguity. It talked about the
relationship between teacher-Pemberton and student-Morgan. This
relationship grows over time, they felt nervous. Pemberton wanted to
leave with his student Morgan, but they didn’t have money. To my
surprise, Morgan’s parents not pay Pemberton, and Pemberton didn’t tell
his student because he worried that revealing the true situation of
Morgan ’s parents would hurt Morgan. It was very ridiculous that the
poor Morgan’s parents had been pretending to be nobles, not only did not
pay Pemberton money, and even borrowed money from Pemberton. They had
been in different countries, different residences. Morgan is the bond
between his parents and Pemberton, and I think this was a vague bond,
because the relationship between Morgan and Pemberton had a lot of
problems, such as money, emotion and reality. It’s a tragic story, From
this story, I see the lack of civilization and morality in that era. The
funny experience of the characters is also the presentation of the
society, which plays a warning role in the reality. Under that social
condition, the tragic ending in the novel is deserved. It’s a carefully
woven story, creep and tragic, to make readers think.
