《the pupil》
Via
The pupil tells the story of Morgan, a clever and friendless boy. The
story begins when he is only 11, and ends when he is 15. His parents,
especially his mother, who often lied and cheated, and pemberton, a
penniless young tutor from Oxford. Morgan can't go to school because of
heart disease, so it is necessary to hire a homestay tutor. There is no
information on Pemberton's lessons other than that Morgan should have
done the right thing. At times, young Morgan seemed smarter than his
college teacher. Morgan's parents pretended to be aristocrats. However,
despite Morgan's mother's repeated promises to pay Pemberton back, she
only gave him token money a few times and even tried to borrow money
from a penniless governess, which made him laugh. Families often move
from one country to another, from one dwelling to another. Neither of
Morgan's parents seems to be working. Morgan liked Pemberton very much,
and he liked Morgan, too. Morgan wanted to escape the Pemberton deceit,
but they could not do it without money. The story is full of irony.
