The Virtue of Human and Return to Nature

--a book review of Walden

Through the human history, many philosophers had searched the core of virtue. Confucius and his followers attributed it to the obedient of the rules and love lying in human’s relationship. This kind of idea influenced our society for thousands of years. While we are busy finding its answer, Thoreau used his book to give us an enlightenment. The core of human virtue lies in the relationship with nature.

In the 1840s, the world witnessed a big change—the development of industry and reform of the institution. It’s a time when people urged to talk about the news of French politics and seek fortune in the company of steam. In the writer’s motherland—America, there was also a hidden tide of civil war. It’s obvious that most of the people were limited to the human society itself or even just their own little world.

It’s just in this hurry time that some naturalists like Thoreau stands out with the return to the nature. From the appearance you may think the writer is a hermit who is tired of the world. But in the book you may find some interesting points prove his love for the life. He listened the music of the forest performed by the birds and wind; he enjoyed the pure cultivation in his yard and benefited from a little income; he welcomed every visitor and greeted the passengers in the train. Thoreau is just like a spectator of the human society. He never lost the passion of improve the world but he just thinks there’s no need to be so hurry and complex. He often cares about his own benefits but never be so greedy and aggressive. In the book we could find that his only aim is to live by his honest labor and enjoy the nature.

Our virtue is complex, but the final core is to seek a harmony between the environment and ourselves. If we just keep being troubled by the trifles of selfishness and the conflict with others, there will not be happiness. We all need to live in the nature wherever you are. So why just pay attention to our heart and the true home? You may find that the more you return to the nature, the more you approach the pure reason. That’s because you will not be influenced by your own status, benefit and experience. You will just forget yourself and think as the creator.

Nature is where we come from, and it’s due to be where we go back to. Many glorious creatures like dinosaurs and Megalodon ended in dying out. All of the animals in the nature has their home to return and so do us, so why not just search the balance in the nature and take care of our home? Once you find you forget your identity in the nature, you will find the core of human virtue.
