“I don’t like favor;they oppress and make me feel like a slave.I’d
rather do everything for myself, and be perfectly independent.”Louisa May
Alcott, who wrote this sentence in her famous novel Little Women wanted
to show the demand for independence and freedom in work and marriage of
women. She is an American writer born in Germantown Pennsylvania, but
she spent her life in Concord near Massachusetts. Influenced by her
father, she became interested in writing very early. To help sustain
poor families, Louisa had to earn money as a maid, tutor and tailor
before she became a professional writer. The great novel that she wrote
tells us the story of four sisters in the big picture of American Civil
War. Meg, the eldest sister of the family, was beautiful and virtuous.
She pursued the real love that she wanted. Although life was simple and
cash strapped after marriage, the couple never complained and it’s the
poor life that made them find what they really wanted, gave them the
meaning of living. Jane who loved reading , the second elder sister of
the family, was the core character of the novel. She always showed her
strong optimistic and self-reliance personality. Beth, the third elder
sister, loved her family, the poor, the weak without any reward. Amy,
the youngest sister, dreamed to be a great artist. Finicky as she was,
she could pear any setbacks when pursuing her dream. The novel
established in normal life is so fine and smooth. Readers will calm down
and be attracted by the fine sentiment which was exposed in Little
Women. When reading this book. In order to embody the connotation“
self-esteem and self-respect of women” Louisa chose to use four sisters’
qualities showed in their lives. When they lost themselves in facing
with the difficulties and obstacles settled in front of them on the road
of life, their mother, Mrs.March said“Our burden are here, our road is
before us, and the longing for goodness and happiness is the guide that
leads us through many troubles and mistakes to the peace which is a true
Celestrial City.” to encourage them and most importantly to guide their
ways. She is a great mother who used virtue and action instead of preach
to teach girls how to shape themselves, how to make the life become what
they expected, how to accept and tolerate the unlovely things that
happened around them. Having read this fantastic book. I learned
everyone had his own power to conquer obstacles, of course including
women. It’s their rights to choose their lives, it’s their wishes to
live an independent, untrammeled life that nobody else can interfere,
it’s their independence personality that makes the whole world full of
possibilities. Sensitive as the novel is, there is still a slight
deficiency in character portrayal ——male characters are less vivid than
females characters. Because of the scanty communication with men, Louisa
May Alcott couldn’t describe male characters in a full-scale way as she
did when portraying women. In short, Little Women is a great book which
have displayed a real picture scroll of society under the American Civil
War for its readers. It makes us know the desire to the freedom of
pursuing marriage, love, work, morality, personality, requirement of the
right to control their own lives.
