The review of Little Women

Cornelius

Little Women is a novel written by Louisa May Alcott, an American female writer. Mr. March, living in New England, went to the battlefield as a chaplain during the Civil War. The novel describes his wife and four daughters’ miserable but strong and optimistic life. The story follows these four women as they grow from girls to little women, telling their love and their respective pursuit of different ideals and destiny.

The novel emphasizes that women should be independent, self-respecting, kind and self-reliant. From the four sisters, we can see many good qualities. Although the elder sister Meg yearned for the rich life, she finally chose to marry with a poor man whose name is John. She is kind and filial who will assume the responsibility when father and mother are not at home. Jo is the first woman in her family who has the consciousness of independence and feminism. Since her childhood, she hoped to do what men can do. She loved writing and wanted to make a difference. And she did become a writer finally. Beth is virtuous and very lovable. She fell ill because she visited the poor people cared for by her mother, but she did not complain about anything. The calmness in her face of death was respected. The youngest sister, Amy was vain but kind and lovely. She changed the perfume she wanted to give to her mother into a better one. She loved painting and made unremitting efforts for her dream. The growth process of the four daughters is also related to family education. The education mode of their mother Mrs. March is very successful. Her values have influenced the four daughters. She is full of love. Sometimes she would take the children to help people in need. She brought up the four sisters with kindness, selflessness and beauty.

What I pay most attention to is the setting of the novel. The author's birth coincided with the rise of the first feminist movement in the United States, which did not end until the 1920s. The American women's movement takes the struggle for women's suffrage as its starting point. In 1776, the Declaration of Independence issued by the United States became the ideological and theoretical basis of American feminism. In the Revolutionary War, American women fought not only for national independence, but also for women's liberation. In the same year, Abigail Adams and Mary Oates Warren, two prominent figures in the American feminist movement, signed a letter to the Continental Congress. It demanded that women should be given the right to vote on the grounds. The feminist movement in the United States not only touched the laws and constitution of the United States, but also greatly changed the concept of American. Little Woman is a semi-autobiographical novel in which the author wrote part of herself. Louisa May Alcott was an independent and self-reliant woman who contributed to the feminist movement in the real world. That's why Jo is such a different girl. Jo and her sisters represent women who are already independent and feminist.

After its publication, the novel touched the hearts of countless readers, especially female readers. They gain a lot power from this book. The novel is written with delicate language and sincere emotion. Little Women teaches us when to stand up and when to compromise. Life is not perfect, so the end of Jo and Laurie is already predetermined. Little women also tell us that families should encourage each other in life, face trials together, and even make sacrifices for each other. When her father was dying of illness, Jo cut off her long hair without hesitation, in exchange for twenty-five dollars to save her father. In spite of her generosity to her father, Jo would weep silently for the loss of her beautiful long hair. It is in the four sisters that the reader sees the independence, strength and kindness which the ideal woman should have. That’s why they pursue and love Little Women so much.
