Chasing the moon

梁曼诗

Recently, I read the original English book the moon and sixpence. In the process of reading, I have many feelings and thoughts. After reading this book, I feel that my heart is much purer, more powerful and more courageous to face all the difficulties I encounter, just to pursue my inner dream.

The moon and sixpence is a novel written by William Somerset Maugham, a British novelist. It was written in 1919.In this year, In this year, Britain participated in the Paris Peace Conference. At that time, Britain was in its heyday, people were under great pressure to work, and some people were lack of enthusiasm for ideals. In this case, based on the life of Paul Gauguin, a French impressionist painter, the author describes Strickland, an ordinary stockbroker in London, who is suddenly possessed by art, abandons his wife and son, abandons the rich and happy life of others, goes to Tahiti Island in the South Pacific Ocean, writes his own brilliant life with his brush score, and values his life All into the gorgeous canvas story.

In this work, the author expresses his antipathy to the modern western civilization that fetters and strangles the artist's personality and creation. He put his yearning for the ideal life and his loathing for the life without passion on Strickland. By describing Strickland's pursuit of ideals, he describes his thoughts on art and life, on the role of human irrational consciousness in the civilized society, which makes the work have a strong modernity and artistry.

The plot of this novel is not complicated, but it is very attractive. It is its simplicity that makes us think more.Strickland is a stockbroker working in London. He has a wealthy and happy family: beautiful wife, vanity and two healthy and happy children. However, in their 17th year of marriage, he suddenly left home to Paris to pursue his painting ideal. At this time, he did not have any basis for painting, just a love. On his way of wandering, his life became very embarrassed, and he almost died of hunger and disease several times. He wandered on and on until he came to Tahiti and married a native girl, ETA. They lived in isolation, where he painted every day. Unfortunately, he soon became infected with leprosy, and a year before his death, he became blind. Etta took care of him until he finished his own giant mural and died of his body festering. According to his last words, his wife burned down the room with murals, without even leaving a piece of wood.

As a college student, I learned a lot from this novel. First of all, I understand the importance of ideals. For the sake of ideals, we are willing to face countless difficulties and face and challenge countless difficulties bravely. Just like Strickland, even though there are many difficulties ahead, in order to pursue our ideals, we are willing to pay the price that others think is too high, just to pursue the lighthouse in our hearts. Secondly, I have learned that being a human being cannot be too utilitarian, and cannot always live in the eyes of others. If Strickland always lives in the eyes of others, he will be satisfied with the seemingly happy life and give in to difficulties, rather than really pursue the inner ideal. Finally, the burning of the mural also shows that he did not paint for others, just for the love in his heart.

Charles's life showed me different possibilities. I think of a line from the movie big night: "he lives at another level". He always lives in a different place. He chose to abandon the existing identity and shackles, and really stay away from everything he felt boring, and take off the shackles to find his inner dream. He is like a pilgrim, taking off the shackles of the outside world and returning to the true step by step. In his own words, "I have to draw, just like a drowning man has to struggle.". If there is any difference between him and others, he is more obedient to fate than others. Dream how enchanting, how sharp, people in panic around, fled to fame, or profit, or seek fame and wealth without resentment. But Charles refused to be the "people" in "people". He looked up and saw the moon.

In today's fast-paced society, "the moon and Sixpence" has a special significance. For people who are busy chasing material and don't know how to fly their hearts, it is important for us to see "poetry and distance". In fact, it also tells us that reality and the present can't be forgotten. In life, the ideal and the reality are sometimes contradictory, but they are also the eternal theme of life. We need to learn to balance, more to know the value and significance of our life, rather than the existence of the zombie, but to know how to love life, to know that life needs to have a life in front of us, but also poetry and distance.
