The idea of plague began to brew after Paris was occupied by German
fascists in 1940. Camus had planned to use the form of fable to depict
the "terrible era" in which fascism devoured thousands of
lives like plague bacteria. So this book doesn’t really want to tell the
danger of plague but the occupation. However If we ignore the background
and regard "plague" as a dilemma that everyone may encounter,
plague will be more valuable because of its in-depth observation of
human nature in dilemma and the true feelings of human beings huddling
together to warm themselves in despair. When I first read the story, I
unconsciously connected it to recent disease. Because we are
experiencing it so that we can understand this story better. In this
story, I can see some people devoted themselves to help others; I can
see some people take advantage of plague to make money; I can also see
some people gradually lost their vitality and lives. Different people
have different destinies. It is very cruel but very real. In this book
Camus mainly adopts the third person narrative perspective of internal
focus and this makes our reader look at the whole story from a objective
perspective. And the unknown “writer” also give us a sense of mystery.
Dr.Rieux can be said the most important character. It is he that push
the story go ahead. He is kind, selfless, considerable and firm. He can
get along with all kinds of people and understand their true feeling. He
thought there are more things to admire in men than to despise. This
obviously shows his kindness and firmness. But he also thought such joy
is always imperiled. This also gives us warn. The second important
person is Tarrou. He is very selfless but he died from plague just
before the plague left. It was so pity. He has been strong against the
plague, even to the end of his life, he did not give up. Reading this
book in a special year can gives us a special feeling. By reading it, I
am able to gain much bravery and confidence to confront difficulties in
the future.
