The book report of Les Miserables Les Miserables, a masterpiece of
Victor Hugo, is set in France in the 1810s. It is considered as the most
successful realistic novel in the 19th century. The novel centers on
Jean Valjean's story and displays the spirit and revolution of France at
that era which was full of demoralization and unjust. During that time,
men were driven to crime by unfair law, children were bullied and the
poor staved to death. People suffered from the enormous misery caused by
the uneven of power and wealth and the gap between the poor and the
entrepreneur had been deepened by the industrial revolution. Hugo
unveiled the disorder of society and the greed and corruption in
government through a series of stories which were honest and full of
human concern. I would rather describe Hugo as a idealist than a
realist. His novel showed the sin of us humanity combined with the lofty
morality scattered in our society. Most of the characters from Les
Miserables are delicated. Fantine sold her hair and front teeth in order
to raise her daughter. Marius devoted himself into the revolution. All
of them discarded their own fear and pursued a more nobel aim. As the
saying goes, the human hymn is the hymn of courage. Hugo exalted the
courage of devotion and the courage to persist and continue in the face
of feelings of guilt of meaninglessness, which were absent from that
era. Hugo's writing is brutally tough and savagely humorous and the
characters are vivid and distinctive. Nevertheless, I didn't see much
autonomy on Cosette. She was obedient to her father and husband. She
went to England with her father even though she had already fallen in
love with Marius. When Marius estranged her father, she did not show any
resistance. She is a doll, a symbol of beauty. She is out of the cruel
world, which makes her so unreal. What's more, The plot of the novel
relies too much on coincidence to be realistic. The dramatic story makes
it a book which is easy to read and spread. After all these years, Les
Miserables is still a hot spot in the literary and art circles. It has
been made into a movie which has won three Academy Awards. The enduring
appeal of Les Miserables and other similar masterpieces reflects the
remaining uneven and unjust in this world. The existence of
discrimination and gap between classes generate series of confliction
for centuries on end. The last few month have witnessed the huge racial
campaign in America. People paraded and destroyed statues of slave
owners as a symbol of destruction of racism. According to the second law
of thermodynamics, the universe is getting even and the existing
restrain will finally disappear with a wisp of smoke. Our world will
eventually turn into a mixture of all culture and all races. And the
world will be no more pathetic but harmony.
