Book review

The other days I finished reading the moon and sixpence, which indeed
a classic novel. Moon is a symbol of sacredness and loftiness, which
represents a beautiful ideal and true love. Sixpence represents the
harsh reality. This book depicts the contradiction of ideal and reality
and the conflict of art and conflict. Charles Strickland, 40-year-old,
had a successful career and a happy family. But in order to pursue his
dream of painting, he left his wife and children and went to Paris.
Finally, he went to Tahiti, an isolated island, and created many amazing
masterpieces. He completed his pursuit of the “moon”. When I first
read this book, I think it is very ridiculous. But now I can understand
this behavior. There are also some people in life who give up
comfortable life to pursue dream. They may be regarded as a
heterogeneous, but the spirit of daring to break the routine is
praiseworthy. But most of us are stuck in reality. We love the “moon”
dearly, we may never touch it, and we may touch the sixpence in their
pockets everyday to live carefully in the word. It is a tragedy, and
grater tragedy is that we have to live forever in pain. Most of us have
to make some concession to common sense, but Charles Strickland was
single-minded in the pursuit of his dream, and he was willing to
sacrifice himself for it. I admire it. But he may have gone overboard.
Much of what he has done has gone beyond the limits of acceptability. In
this, too, he failed. Everyone has their own dream life; everyone can
achieve their own value. If you look on the ground in search of a
sixpence, you don’t look up, and so miss the moon. So why are we
obsessed with reality?
