Book review of “TO KILL A MOCKING BIRD” Recently, I’ve finished the book
“TO KILL A MOCKING BIRD” by Harper Lee. This story is the first and the
only novel of Harper Lee. It is about racial discrimination.
Coincidently, it matches the recent events of anti-racial-discrimination
around the world. So it makes me realize that racial discrimination is
cruel and it is actually happening and hurting people on the weak side.
The book really strikes me in the heart. The story is set in America
during the Depression and it is about a white man Atticus Finch helped a
black man Tom Robinson to defend the wrong accusation of raping a white
girl. This unusual action was opposed by white men at that time when
segregation was still going on. Some people insulted Atticus and his two
children Jem and Scout for his helping the innocent black man. Though
Atticus tried hard to defend for Tom, he failed to fight against the
stereotype and discrimination. Tom got killed at last. Another story
line of the book is about the relationship of an unwelcomed strange man
Boo who never goes out and the two children. Unlike the others, the
children saw him as a friend. And Boo saved the children’s lives when
they were retaliated by Bob Ewell, the white girl’s father. Mocking bird
refers to the innocent in the book, the Finches, Tom and Boo who hurt by
discrimination. The story is sad but it wakes people to stand up and
fight against discrimination and to reach for justice and equality. One
opinion in the book impresses me a lot. That is everybody has his or her
strength and weakness, and it is truth that some people are more
talented in certain fields but some are born with disability. In this
aspect, all men are not created equal. But there is one place where all
men are created equal, it is the court. Court holds in esteem the
concept of all men are created equal. Law should be humane and
equitable. Recently, the demonstration of anti-racial-discrimination is
carried on around the world. It reveals that racial discrimination is
still a serious problem. There are people get frisked, even get killed,
for no reason, or only for the color of their skin. It is sad to see
people suffer for racial discrimination. We appeal for equality. There
is no absolute equality in the world. Equality is not using the same
standard to measure everyone and require everyone to share the same
wealth, make the same contribution, or live the same life. It is
respecting others to be different, understanding different standpoints,
and including different life styles. The real equality is all people
have the right to be themselves and would not be antagonized or
discriminated against for being what they are. Even though every single
person seems small facing the stubborn discrimination, we should all
hold the belief to change it, because when we get together, the power of
belief will be stronger than you can imagine.
