Reading report Little Women. Louisa May Alcott. Beijing : Foreign
Language Teaching and Research Press, 2007. Published in the 19th
century , the Little Women tells a story of 4 girls growing up in a poor
family during the civil war. Set in the United States , these 4 sisters
grow up with the tide of times. They live with mother only because their
father went to the frontline. Girls have obviously different
personalities but they do appreciate each other. Among these four
girls, Jo is the most impressive one. She is outgoing, desiring for
adventures. She longs for freedom and wants to be a writer. Her ambition
and personality is the easiest to be observed. But every girl in this
family is precious and warm. They may make tricks to each other but they
also care about their sisters and this family and this world. They give
their meals to the poor in spite of their own hunger. They play a
home-made drama for their mother after attending a big party. Some of
them long for l true love, some of them believe more on other things.
In my opinion, the most powerful point that the author want to convey is
that women have their rights to choose their own life as they like. They
can choose to be a housewife , taking care of her family. They can also
choose to be an “office lady” to purse careers they love. The freedom of
making choice and decision is precious however this world changes. And
this book also shows the warmth and love in their family and in their
whole life. They do have quarrels with people but in the book you can
see their growth. They learn to love and appreciate in this life journey
like every normal person in this world. How to love someone ? How to
make a choice between love and dream ? “Each tries to be cheerful in
spite of wintry weather , hard work , and unsatisfied desires of
pleasure-loving youth.” This story begins with their youth of both ups
and downs and ends with a happy ending(maybe ?).
