The Moon and Sixpence is a very popular novel which is written by the
world famous English writer William Somerset Maugham in 1919.Maugham was
adopted by his uncle who was the prototype in another book written by
Maugham.Maugham was poor in his early years when he was a medical
student so that he spent a long time with the middle and lower
classes, which became the material for his novels later in his life. His
miserable early life experience endowed him with the ability to play
sharp sarcasm. His splendid masterpiece made him the richest and the most
famous writer of the twentieth century. In the book the writer
discussed an ancient problem:which is more important?sixpence or looking
at the moon in the sky far far away. Strckland gave up the comfortable
life in London and broke the normal standard of ethical rule, which
indeed caused a lot of problems to the people around him.Indeed,Maugham
had an inclination of despising women, which I don’t agree with. But
Strickland succeeded in purchasing the passion in his deep heart ,which
brought tremendous satisfaction to his life. The meaning of life should
be like this-to stand on the border of the world, and to broaden the
boundary of the human civilization. However, without sixpence in my
pocket,it may be a little hard to look at the beautiful moon in the
sky.On the other hand, without the moon in the sky, even millions of pence
means nothing for me.Both poor life and banal life are unbearable. In
conclusion, for most people,Strckland is only a very occasional
example,it is wiser to focus more on sixpence in our pockets rather than
staring at the moon .Once in a while,we can raise our heads and enjoy
the great sight of the moon, but our hands should hold tight on the
sixpence .
